Business After Hours Holiday Party: Take a break from the holiday hustle while sampling tapas and drinks from the Grove’s newest eatery. The Forest Park South Business Association Holiday Happy Hour will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17 at Sanctuaria Wild Tapas, 4198 Manchester.

17th Ward Holiday Party: More than 200 guests brought in the season and toasted the 2009 community award winners at 17th Ward Holiday Party at the brand-new Library Annex in the Spring Street Lofts. Check back soon for photos!



Chouteau Park planning: The latest plans for the new Chouteau Park were revealed at a public meeting Nov. 11 at Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club Adam's Park Unit. John Hoal of H3 Studio walked meeting attendees through a presentation of the plans, which have been developed with input from a local advisory committee. The meeting was hosted by 17th Ward Alderman Joseph D. Roddy.

Who made the list?


Look it up: The first Forest Park South Community Directory, a joint project of Forest Park Southeast Development Corp. and the Forest Park South Business Association, is now available. The directory, which contains listings of local businesses and organizations and community information, is being distributed to residents in the area. To receive your free directory, contact Kristin Rapinac at 314-229-2115.

Home repairs: A Forest Park Southeast resident  recently got a helping hand for much-needed home repairs thanks to Washington University Medical Center Redevelopment Corp., Rebuilding Together St. Louis and Home Depot. About a dozen volunteers spent a day fixing up Julie Glenn's home in the 4500 block of Chouteau, building a new font porch, repairing a bathroom wall, replacing roof tiles and making several other needed repairs. Glenn, who had neither the funds nor the expertise to repair her home, expressed gratitude to the organizations and volunteers who pitched in to help. "I was just overwhelmed. Sanctuaria: Touted as "St. Louis' wildest new tapas restaurant and bar," Sanctuaria is opening for dinner Tuesday, Nov. 10 in the space previously known as Agave, 4198 Manchester.

Au revoir, Chez Léon: Local celeb chef Gerard Craft will open Brasserie by Niche in the spot previously known as Chez Léon. The restaurant will stick with French bistro-inspired fare, although both the menu and the décor – inside and out – are getting an update.

Doggy day care: K-9 Carnival, a center offering daytime boarding, playtime and training for dogs, recently opened at 4501 Chouteau in Forest Park Southeast. The facility offers a chance for city pooches to frolic together rather than lounging on the couch or in a kennel all day. “Our main goal  at K-9 Carnival is to provide hours and hours of daily exercise along with mental stimulation to dogs living in this crowded urban area, ” says co-founder Dr. Pam Clary, a veterinarian and Central West End resident.

CWE Sustainable Development Plan: Building heights, setbacks and uses were the focus of the second public workshop for the Central West End Sustainable Development Plan and Code on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Schlafly Library. More than 50 people viewed a presentation led by John Hoal of H3 Studio and then met in small groups to discuss and provide feedback on the aspects of the plan.

Grove Fest: Thousands flocked to the Grove for the fourth annual Grove Fest Saturday, Sept. 19 on Manchester Avenue. This year's street festival featured St. Louis' hottest bands and DJs, live art demonstrations, a community mural painting, street performers, the Zombie Squad, Arch Rival Roller Girls, the Future Legend Skaters, and a Freakers Ball starring Clownvis Presley. Festival-goers also sampled food and drink from the Grove's top eateries and clubs.

CVS pharmacy: After CVS representatives presented a revised proposal for a pharmacy on the corner of Lindell and Sarah, members of the West Pine-Laclede Neighborhood Association voted at their September meeting to continue discussions with the pharmacy.  The association had voted to reject an earlier CVS proposal at the August meeting.

Nine NorthCity Talk: About 125 neighbors and friends of the 17th Ward gathered on Nine North's urban garden patio for 17th Ward City Talk Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2009. Alderman Joe Roddy hosted the event, which was sponsored by CWE Midtown Development and Forest Park Southeast Development Corp. Joseph Downs of Opus Northwest, developers of Nine North and the Park East Tower, talked about Opus' investment in the CWE. The event was catered by Wild Flower restaurant.

Community Garden: Garnders in Botanical Heights are beginning to see the fruits of their labor at the Community Garden near Folsom and Thurman. The Botanical Heights Community Garden is tended by a mix of experienced and new gardeners who share an interest in growing vegetables, herbs and flowers.





Portes ouvertes, puertas abiertas: St. Louis' first language immersion school opened its doors to 180 kindergarten and first-grade students Aug. 17 at the school's freshly renovated quarters in Forest Park Southeast. St. Louis Language Immersion Schools founder and executive director Rhonda Broussard announced the charter school's opening at a press conference and open house on Friday, Aug. 7. Former St. Louis Mayor Vince Schoemehl and 17th Ward Alderman Joseph D. Roddy were on hand to congratulate Broussard and her team.

Midtown hotel proposal: Central West End Midtown Development's Development Committee has signaled tentative conditional support for a five-story, 100-room hotel on Forest Park Avenue in Midtown. The new hotel, to be developed and managed by Sasak Corp. under the Holiday Inn Express & Suites flagship, would replace the former Raffie Vending Co. warehouse located at 3663 Forest Park Ave. between Spring and Grand.

Residents of the Botanical Heights, Tiffany and Gibson Heights neighborhoods came out to celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday evening, Aug. 4.

New BJC building:
BJC is planning a 12-story outpatient clinic and office building at the northwest corner of Euclid and Forest Park Avenue. The building, which will replace the Ettrick Building at 4901-05 Forest Park as well as the building just to the north at 3-17 S. Euclid, will include ground-floor retail along Euclid. BJC also plans to demolish the former Schoenberg Nursing School at 4949 Forest Park for a staging area, which will be turned into a park after construction is completed. The block is located in the 28th Ward, but bordered by the 17th Ward on Forest Park Avenue, Euclid and Laclede.

Chouteau Park Workshop: What's your vision for a perfect neighborhood park? That's what Forest Park Southeast community members were asked at a park planning workshop hosted by 17th Ward Alderman Joe Roddy Wednesday, July 22 at Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club – Adams Park.

FPSEDC Development Committee: Forest Park Southeast Development Corp.'s Development Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tues., July 21 at FPSEDC, 4371 Arco. On the agenda: requests for support for a variance for Details, a proposed auto detailing shop at 4014 Chouteau; a liquor license for Big Moe's, a new bar at 1072 Tower Grove; tax abatement for the renovation of 4162-4168 Manchester for Space architectural firm; and tax abatement for the renovation of 4300 Manchester by Mangrove Redevelopment.

Green Grove: Restoration St. Louis, owned by Amrit and Amy Gill, has been awarded $2.5 million in New Markets Tax Credits for the Green Grove project in Forest Park Southeast. The $14 million project will include both new and renovated mixed-use buildings along Manchester between Kingshighway and Vandeventer. The developers will seek LEED certification for the projects, which will include the first zero carbon-emissions building in St. Louis.

Who made the list?


Fired up: Taking a cue from the Hill, Washington University Medical Center has teamed up with local artist Grace McCammond to transform the fire hydrants in Forest Park Southeast into art. The goal is to create a calling card for the neighborhood. Fire hydrants along Manchester from Tower Grove to Vandeventer in the Grove will be painted first in a design inspired by the new Grove logo. Fire hydrants in the Forest Park Southeast neighborhood will be painted in a different theme in the second phase of the project.

Merger plan: The CWEMD Board of Directors agreed to explore a plan to form a ward-wide community development corporation at the June Board meeting. The proposed 17th Ward Community Development Corp. would combine the functions of the Central West End Midtown and Forest Park Southeast development corporations. The board also voted to support tax abatement for a new restaurant and nightclub on Lindell.

Bar 5: Nancy Novak has opened a third location in the Grove in the former home of the Church Key, 4127 Manchester. Bar 5, just a few steps from Novak's Bar and Grill, is a sports bar featuring pizza, pool tables and darts. Novak opened Nancy's Place at 4510 Manchester earlier this year.

Demolition, dogs & detailing: Forest Park Southeast Development Corp.’s Development Committee voted to oppose a proposal to demolish a three-family building for parking, voted to support a day care center for dogs and tabled a decision on a detailing business at its June meeting.

Three buildings in the 17th Ward – two in Forest Park Southeast and one in the Central West End South – were recognized at Landmarks Association's 2009 Most Enhanced Sites ceremony Friday, May 15.

Pedestrian tunnel opens:
The new underpass connecting Forest Park and Oakland Avenue is now open. The lighted tunnel connects Saint Louis University High School and the St. Louis Science Center with Forest Park between Bowl Lake and the Planetarium.

New footbridge opens: Forest Park Southeast neighbors, local leaders and MoDOT officials and workers celebrated the opening of the new pedestrian bridge over Interstate 64 at a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

CWE Southeast SBD: Voters approved the renewal and expansion of the Central West End Southeast Special Business District by a margin of 69-31 percent in the general city election Tuesday, April 7. Joseph D. Roddy won re-election as 17th Ward Alderman, and Francis Slay won a third term as Mayor of St. Louis.

Public parking: The new parking garage at Nine North, on Euclid between Laclede and West Pine, is now open for business with 180 public parking spaces. The cost for parking is $2 for the first 30 minutes plus $1 per additional 30 minutes. The garage is named for longtime politico and former 17th Ward Alderman Joseph P. Roddy, late father of current 17th Ward Alderman Joseph D. Roddy.
