Safety Tips

Walking


Use the safest route.
Choose a well-lit street.
Stay alert to your surroundings.
Walk against traffic.
Walk near the curb. Avoid doorways, alleys, etc.
Carry cash in your pocket separate from your purse or wallet.
Carry your keys in your hand.
Walk confidently and purposefully.
If someone approaching you makes you feel uncomfortable, cross the street and take evasive actions.
Always listen to your sixth sense.

If you are followed by a vehicle


Turn around and go in the opposite direction.
Try to obtain a license plate number and description of the car and driver.
If you are followed by someone on foot
Immediately cross the street.
Walk toward other people.
If you choose to run, run fast and scream for help.

High-risk areas


Don’t walk alone.
Don’t dress in Sunday best.
Travel in the morning. Avoid late afternoon and evenings.

Exercising


Choose a well-populated route.
Vary your schedule.
Avoid night activity.
Know what businesses are open in the area.
Keep your equipment in good working order.

Driving in your car


Keep plenty of gas in your car.
Drive with all windows up and doors locked when possible.
Never pick up hitchhikers.
Keep your wallet, purse and other valuables out of sight.

In case of car trouble


Drive to a safe, well-lit spot.
Put on emergency flashers, place flares, raise hood, display SEND HELP sign, etc.
If someone stops to assist you, DO NOT get out of your car. Roll the window down a few inches and ask them to get help.
If you are being followed while driving your car, drive to the nearest police station or gas station. If there are no safe places nearby, honk your horn in short, rapid blasts and turn on your emergency flashers. Try to obtain a license number and description of the driver. DO NOT DRIVE HOME OR PULL TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD.

Parking your car


Park in a well-lit area.
Look around before exiting your car.
Keep valuables out of sight.
Lock your car and remove the keys.
Keep packages out of sight. Secure large items in your trunk.
Do not leave radar detectors, stereos, phones, laptop computers or other easily removable valuables in plain sight. If you can, take them with you.
Remove all AC adapter cords from view.
If you place items in your trunk, please do so before arriving at your destination.
With cold weather, remember to not leaver your car running unattended.

Returning to your car


Have your keys in your hand.
Be aware of occupied cars around you.
Look inside your car before entering.
If carrying packages, keep one hand free.
Using Public Transportation
Utilize frequently used bus stops.
Avoid being alone.
Stand behind the bench if possible.
Sit near the driver.
Avoid seats near the door.
If harasses or threatened, report to the driver. Do not just get off the bus.
Trust your instincts.

Safety at work


Place purses, wallets and other valuables out of sight.
While leaving work, walk with others.
Park in well-lit or patrolled areas.
Wear company ID.
Report any suspicious persons not wearing a company ID.
Be aware of strange vehicles or persons near your workplace and report them.
Don’t use stairways alone.
Don’t go into elevators with people who make you feel uncomfortable.
Trust your instincts! Never hesitate to report anything that makes you uncomfortable.

If you are a victim of a crime


Remember the following details as soon as possible after the incident to provide an accurate and complete description of the suspect:

Age
Tattoos/scars/marks
Type of weapon
Height
Weight
Complexion
Hat (color, type)
Tie
Coat
Shirt
Pants/shoes
Hair length/color/texture
Hair style
Eye color
Nose shape
Mouth and lips
Wrinkles
Shape of eyebrow
Sideburns
Shape & size of ears
Cheeks (full/lean)
Facial hair (beard/mustache)
Chin cleft
Neck & Adam’s apple
Glasses
Specific details
What did the suspect say?
